Building Wardrobe Of Appropriate Attire Can Positively Impact A College Experience

If you are a prospective college student or you have already started your college career, you are likely aware that the "uniform" of most college students is quite casual. It can be tempting to roll out of bed and attend class in your pajamas, but dressing appropriately for your classes can actually improve your grade! Think of college as a dress rehearsal for your later career. While it's not necessary to wear a tie or jacket, of course, you should present a neat and well-groomed appearance at all times. You'll be surprised at what it can do for you.

Oversleeping and showing up to class in sweatpants or even pajamas is something almost every college student has done. Unfortunately, when you present a sloppy appearance, you are unconsciously alerting your professor that you are careless in various aspects of your life, including your classes. Waking up an extra half an hour early so that you can select a coordinating and well-fitting outfit is a good way of showing your professor and classmates that you took the time to prepare for class, even in a small way.

Being dressed for class signifies that you are ready to learn. Of course, your class participation grade will depend on many factors, including your actual contributions to class discussions, but showing up to class alert, awake, and well-dressed is certainly a good first step.

When you are making a presentation in front of your class, it is all the more important to dress professionally. Women should wear a nice blouse and dress slacks or a skirt, while men might even consider wearing a tie. Why? Because the way we dress indicates how we value the importance of an occasion. Dressing well for your presentation shows that you not only put some time and thought into your project, but that you respect and value your audience.

Every college student should have a small wardrobe of business-casual clothing and at least one business-professional outfit. What is the difference? You can think of business-casual attire as any reasonably nice clothes that you would feel comfortable wearing in a typical work environment, such as a skirt and sweater, or a sports coat. When giving a class presentation or attending a school-sponsored event such as a play, dinner, or awards ceremony, you will want to have a few clothing options to choose from.

Business-professional would be your typical interview outfit. Every college student should be prepared with a nice interview outfit, since you never know when you will need it in college. You may interview for an internship, go to a career fair, or attend an important conference. Who knows? College can be full of surprises, but having the correct attire in your closet will allow you to be ready for anything.

In a nutshell, a good interview outfit would be a dark, conservatively cut suit. If women choose to go with a skirt suit, the skirt length should be to the knee or lower. A shirt or blouse in white or a muted color is a good choice. Men should wear a tie. Shoes, belts, and other accessories should be high-quality and conservative.

What you wear often says a lot about who you are. Knowing how to dress for success in college can help you make a good impression and get the most out of your undergraduate experience, whether it's a university in Seattle or an online college in South Florida. Even if you are enrolled in an online university, a proper wardrobe will help create a more motivated aura and separate that fact that you are essentially working from home.
